MOLD ALLERGY
The primary cause of health issues related to mold exposure is allergic reactions. Often people believe that they are being poisoned by toxic black molds such as Stachybotrys toxic black mold when in fact they are experiencing mold allergy or asthma. Warning: If you feel sick when in the presence of mold growth, many times a certified mold remediator or mold inspector and even some doctors will attempt to cause panic reactions. Such persons want you to believe you are experiencing toxic reactions caused by exposure to mold when, in the vast majority of times you are experiencing a common allergic reaction. Allergic responses brought on by various fungi, toxic and non toxic, can be a serious concern, and can cause mild to severe reactions that may worsen over time. Typical allergy symptoms include: runny nose, watery eyes, sneezing, coughing, itchy nose, sore throat and on occasion skin rashes.
Our mold inspection teams sometimes notice clients who are suffering from severe allergic reactions to mold when residing in mold infested homes or working in office settings with air quality and mold problems. People sometimes realize only after suffering for months or even years that was hidden mold causing those bothersome symptoms and that the situation is getting more serious and difficult to deal with overtime. Many of our clients arrive at a point in life where they have go or the mold has to go.
It has been estimated that one in five Americans suffers with allergic rhinitis, the single most common chronic disease experienced by humans. In addition, around 14% of the population suffers from allergy-related sinusitis, and 10 to 12% of Americans have allergy-related asthma. About 9% experience allergic dermatitis. SOURCES: (Institute of Medicine, 1993) and (Washington State Department of Health). Considering the prevalence of allergy problems it becomes obvious why hiring a mold inspector or mold testing firm can be important.
TOXIC MOLD
Many fungi that commonly grow in our homes produce toxic substances called mycotoxins. Mycotoxins are found for the most part inside mold spores, however smaller amounts can be found in other parts of the growth as well. Mycotoxins are created by molds to help them be more successful when competing with other species of molds and bacteria. This is a type of micro-biological warfare that has been waged for quite some time now. Common toxicology molds such as Stachybotrys and Fusarium create toxic compounds that are often reported to cause: sore throat, headaches, hair loss, flu symptoms, learning problems, fatigue, diarrhea, general malaise, dermatitis, and depression." Many serious illnesses can result from exposure to mold toxins, but such problems are often the result of lab animal and cell culture studies on toxic black mold, also known as Stachybotrys, and human and animal exposure to Stachybotrys and other toxic molds in infested hay or other foods. It is not likely that toxic molds can cause such problems when we breathe in mold spores via normal exposures encountered in the air of moldy houses and officers. However gathering scientific proof on the effects of toxic mold spores via inhalational exposure is not easy. If you suspect a problem but do not know where fungal growth is, or why it has decided to take up residence in your home or office, it is time to hire a certified mold inspection firm to help figure out the problems cause and origin. Without professional help the problems often lingers on for years or longer. It is wise to have your property tested and inspected by a non-biased professional mold inspector to determine if concern is warranted and if and what corrective measures are needed.
MOLD INFECTIONS
Some molds cause infection by invading human and animal tissues and mucous membranes. Mold related sinus infections are common. Typical bacterial infections of the sinuses are now known by many doctors to first start as fungal infections of the sinuses then progress to bacterial infections only later. Fungal infection of the Ears, eyes, throat, nose, lungs, brain, and heart are well known in the medical community. Such infections can be caused by common house old molds however they usually occur in people with compromised immune systems. Skin and nail infections from fungus are of course very common.
MOLD ODOR OR MVOC'S
While happily consuming water damaged building materials in homes and commercial buildings, molds and bacteria release waste gases made up of volatile organic compounds AKA (VOC). Unlucky homeowners and also mold inspectors commonly know these compounds as mold odors. Volatile organic compounds are organic carbon containing chemicals that evaporate into the air easily at room temperature. Microbial volatile organic compounds AKA (MVOC'S) or mold odors are chemically identical to many other VOC's from non living sources, however the phrase MVOC's is used then those compounds are produced and released by microbes such as bacteria, actinomycetes, and mold. Chemical groups released include esters, aldehydes, and alcohols among other compounds. MVOC or mold odor exposure may cause eye and respiratory system irritation as well as other allergy like symptoms. It has been long known that odd sensations may result from exposure to many man made VOC's such as skin crawling, itching and burning, disorientation, decreased attention, dizziness and several additional effects can result. If allergen or odor producers such as mold, bacteria, or dust mites are living and reproducing in your home and making you ill you may need the help of a mold or air quality professional to preform inspections and testing for you.
