Miami Florida Toxic Mold Inspector Locater and Info on how to identify Stachybotrys (AKA) toxic black mold
The photo at the top left corner of this page is of a very typical growth commonly called toxic black mold, black mold, or stachybotrys. Keywords: Miami Florida Toxic Mold Inspector toxic mold inspector; Miami mold inspector; toxic black mold; stachybotrys.
HOW TO IDENTIFY TOXIC BLACK MOLD
The mold not always, but almost always exhibits a circular growth pattern, forming round colonies of about 1 cm to 20 cm across approximately.
Sometimes the circles are complete as in the photo. Other times, the circles are incomplete and form semi circles or crescent moon shapes when one side of the colony grows but the other side does not, possibly due to a lack of moisture or competition with other mold types.
Also, the mold often forms concentric circles of one circle inside another circle as shown in the photo. I know of no other mold that grows like this outside of the lab.
Stachybotrys is a very dark black mold; it is often reported to be shiny or slimy in appearance, however, from personal experience, this is only true when the mold is wet. When it is dry, it can be powdery.
Stachybotrys or toxic black mold grows in areas where material have been very wet for an extended period of time, such as weeks or months as opposed to days or just a few weeks. It will also grow in areas of extremely high humidity - around 90% or more.
Stachybotrys requires a high-cellulose, low-nitrogen food source, such as paper and very wet conditions for an extended period of time as it is a slow grower.
I have seen hundreds of Stachybotrys colonies and have never seen it growing on metal objects, air conditioning AC ducts, or clothes. Its most common habitats in homes and appears to be on the underside of wet carpets or on the surface of drywall materials on inside drywall walls. When it grows on drywall, it is actually growing on the thin paper that coats both surfaces of the drywall.
